The 5th International Conference-School
ADVANCED MATERIALS and TECHNOLOGIES
25-29 August, 2003 Palanga

Conference Programme

The Conference - School
is intended for young scientists and Ph.D. students interested in Materials Science and Condensed Matter Physics. It continues the tradition of Palanga Summer Schools in Physics started in eighties. Initially, the School was organized for young Lithuanian researchers with background in semiconductor and solid state physics. Senior Lithuanian physicists still remember lectures given by prominent Soviet scientists, now professors at the well-known universities all around the world.

This year the School is devoted to advanced materials and technologies and includes topics of quantum wells and dots, fullerenes, ferroelectrics, nanocomposites , terahertz technology, etc.

In 2003 the support of the European Commission project "Processing, Research and Application of Advanced Materials" (PRAMA) added the international dimension and allowed to invite to the School internationally acknowledged lecturers and foreign students.

City
Palanga, amazing small town on the Baltic coast, this year celebrates its 750 anniversary. The settlement was a significant trading and pagan center in the Middle Ages. PalangaIt began to develop as a resort in the early -19th century. Then, just as now, tourists were attracted to the sun, the sea, and the magnificent dunes. Also you can still see villas, which are left from the late - 19th and early - 20th centuries Although, Palanga is a year - round travel destination, it is really a summer resort. Historical places and natural and cultural monuments are abundant here. Today Palanga is the most popular sea resort in Lithuania. The famous white sand, the beach that seems to stretch forever and pine groves attract thousands of both Lithuanians and foreigners. The most interested tourist site is the Amber Museum, which has tens of thousands of different amber pieces on display, including some bigger than you can imagine. These days, Palanga is also the place to go for active vacationers in search of bars and nightclubs.

Palanga has its own small airport with the international flights from Germany, Sweden, Denmark and Russia. One can also use Vilnius international airport - still the most convenient way to enter Lithuania.
